It happened around 7:15 p.m. when police noticed a group of 50 to 60 ATV riders on Interstate 95, the department said.

One rider on a red quad broke away from the group with smoke coming from the rear of his ATV, according to police. When an officer followed him onto the Walt Whitman Bridge ramp, authorities said the rider "intentionally turned into the officer's motorbike, causing him to lose control and crash."

The rider fled the scene while the officer was taken to Jefferson Hospital with an injured foot and bruising throughout the body, authorities said. He is currently listed in stable condition.

Another rider was later investigated on the 5100 block of Erdick Street but police eventually determined he was not the one involved in the crash, PPD said.

The suspect remains at large and detectives are investigating, they added.
